Bike Short Lengths – How to Choose (5, 6 & 8 Inch)
Quick answer: Bike short length is measured by the inseam, from the crotch seam to the hem. Around 5 inches (12–13cm) is a short length that sits high on the thigh, 6–7 inches (15–18cm) is a mid-thigh length that suits most people and activities, and 8 inches (20cm) or more is a long length that sits closer to the knee and gives the most coverage and the least chance of riding up.
Bike short lengths at a glance
- Short (about 3–5 inch / 8–13cm inseam): cool and leg-lengthening. Great for hot days, sprints, beach walks and Pilates in warm studios.
- Mid-thigh (about 6–7 inch / 15–18cm): the all-rounder. Enough coverage for squats and lunges, still cool for summer.
- Long (8 inch / 20cm and over): the most coverage and the least chafing between the thighs. A good choice for running, cycling and longer days.
Inseam is measured differently by different brands, and the same inseam looks longer on a petite frame and shorter on a tall one, so always check the size guide and think about where you want the hem to sit.
How to choose the right length
For your height
If you're petite, a short to mid-thigh length usually sits in proportion. If you're tall, a mid-thigh or long length gives you similar coverage to what a shorter person gets from a 5–6 inch short.
For your activity
- Pilates and yoga: any length that stays put. Mid-thigh is popular because it doesn't move when you're lying down or in straps.
- Gym and HIIT: mid-thigh or long, so the hem stays down through squats and jumps.
- Running: long lengths help prevent thigh chafing.
- Everyday and beach: short to mid-thigh with an oversized tee.
To stop riding up
Riding up is mostly about fit, not just length. Look for a high waistband that holds the shorts in place, a fabric with good recovery, and a fitted leg. Read more in bike shorts that don't ride up.
Do high-waisted bike shorts help?
Yes. A high-rise waistband anchors the shorts at your natural waist, so they're less likely to slip down at the waist or creep up at the leg. It also smooths and supports through the tummy, which is why most of our shorts are high-waisted.

Frequently asked questions
What is the most flattering bike short length?
Mid-thigh suits most people because it shows some leg without feeling too short. If you want to lengthen your legs, go shorter; if you want more coverage, go longer.
Are 8 inch bike shorts too long?
Not if you want coverage or are prone to chafing. On a petite frame they can sit close to the knee, so check the inseam against your own thigh.
How do I measure the inseam on my own shorts?
Lay a pair you like flat and measure from the crotch seam down the inside leg to the hem. Use that as a guide when you shop.
Should bike shorts be tight?
Fitted, yes. Loose bike shorts move around and ride up. They should feel smooth and secure without the waistband digging in.
