Compression Leggings – What They Are & How They Should Fit
Quick answer: Compression leggings are made from a firmer, high-stretch fabric that hugs your legs and waist more closely than everyday leggings. That snug fit gives a smoothing, held-in feel, keeps fabric from moving around during exercise, and many women find them more supportive for training, running and long days on their feet. They should feel firm but never painful, with no numbness, pinching or marks that linger.
What makes leggings "compression"?
- Firmer fabric. A dense nylon and spandex knit with more recovery, so it springs back into shape and holds you in.
- A higher, stronger waistband. Usually high-rise and often foldover or V-shaped, so it sits at your natural waist and doesn't roll.
- Shaping details. Contoured back seams or subtle scrunch shaping to lift and smooth.
- Minimal seams. A smooth front and internal gusset so nothing rubs when you squat, lunge or stretch.
Compression leggings vs regular leggings
Regular everyday leggings are softer and more relaxed, which makes them great for lounging, walking and gentle classes. Compression leggings trade some of that softness for hold. Choose compression if you want a smoothing, sculpted look, more support through high-intensity sessions or running, or leggings that stay put without constant adjusting. Choose softer leggings if you want maximum comfort for long, low-intensity days.

How tight should compression leggings be?
- Snug all over, with no loose fabric at the knee or ankle.
- The waistband stays flat when you bend and sit, without digging into your stomach.
- You can breathe and move freely through a deep squat.
- No tingling, numbness or deep marks. If you get any of these, go up a size.
If you're between sizes, size down for a firmer hold or up for more comfort. Our activewear size guide has measurements for every size.
When to wear them
- Gym and HIIT: the hold stops fabric shifting during jumps and lifts.
- Running and walking: a firm, smooth fit with less chafing.
- Reformer Pilates: a fitted leg keeps fabric away from springs and straps. See what to wear to reformer Pilates.
- Everyday wear: with an oversized tee or zip jumper for a smooth, polished look.

Frequently asked questions
Are compression leggings good for everyday wear?
Yes, as long as they fit comfortably. Many women wear them all day for the smooth, held-in feel. If you're wearing them for long hours, make sure the waistband doesn't dig in when you sit.
Should compression leggings be a size smaller?
Not usually. Start with your normal size using your waist and hip measurements. Only size down if you want a firmer hold and still feel comfortable moving.
Are compression leggings squat-proof?
A dense compression fabric is usually opaque, but always do the squat test in good light. Read our guide to squat-proof leggings.
How do I wash compression leggings?
Wash cold and inside out, line dry in the shade, and skip the dryer and fabric softener so the fabric keeps its stretch. See how to wash activewear.
